This is diaspora rock
A tune written on leased earth
By those never embraced, and only grudgingly accepted,
By the states of their birth

This is the re-emergence of the rock and roll niggers
Raised on music created by, then stolen from, their forebearers
And mostly abandoned by their counterparts

This is a provocation
To discussion, to judgement, to emotion, to anger
Because the most provocative thing a black person can possibly be in America
Is alive and unashamed…

This is a hope for an antidote
To PTSD, anxiety, depression, diabetes, high blood pressure,
sickle-cell anemia, chemical dependence, HIV, implicit and explicit bias, poverty, gentrification, underinvestment, mass incarceration, gang retaliations, stray bullets, and officer involved shootings
A prayer for inoculation against the ailments that haunt the black experience

This is an attempt to combine disparate and opposing strands of identity
In order to reveal context for a viewpoint that has been as of yet difficult to define or explain

This is a Hail Mary in the darkness for understanding
From a cruel world
Of an honestly stated experience

From a man with no culture
To a nation with no memory…
